Marquita Berry

Alchemist, Superhero, Womanist

Welcome to Brown Sugar Bookshelf, where the magic of words meets the power of community. I am Marquita, a proud Womanist on a mission to celebrate the brilliance of black authors and unlock the transformative potential of literature.

I believe in the profound impact of words on the mind and spirit. We've assembled a curated collection of books by black authors as a testament to the richness of diverse voices, offering a journey that expands the mind, deepens faith, and empowers readers. Our ultimate mission is to amplify the voices of black authors, uncovering knowledge and insights that send waves of enlightenment and inspiration through our communities.

A Love For Reading, A Legacy of Wisdom
My love for reading has deep roots, nurtured by the boundless passion of my mother and the dynamic conversations of her monthly book club meetings with my aunts. These women, intelligent and beautiful, became my aspirational figures. Within the pages of books, I found not just stories, but solace—a soft place to land in a world filled with rough edges.

Donald Goines was my first literary love, setting the stage for lifelong relationships with authors who speak to the soul. From the indomitable spirit of Alice Walker to the poetic wisdom of Maya Angelou, the timeless tales of Zora Neale Hurston, and the groundbreaking imagination of Octavia Butler—these voices resonate with the various cycles of my journey, serving as beacons of wisdom at each turn.

Literature as a Guiding Light
For me, literature is more than a collection of words; it's a guiding light through life's twists and turns. I've witnessed the transformative power of books, and I'm passionate about sharing this experience with you. Our carefully curated selection is a testament to the diversity, resilience, and brilliance within the black literary world.

Elevating Communities Through Reading
Beyond spreading awareness about remarkable black authors, I am dedicated to contributing to the elevation of our community. Reading is not just a solitary activity; it's a communal experience that can empower, enlighten, and inspire. By showcasing the transformative and empowering potential of literature, we aim to create a ripple effect of positive change in our communities.

Thank you for joining us on this literary journey. Together, let's celebrate the voices that have shaped our history and continue to illuminate our future.

With love and literature,
